Hydrotherapy Pool Up-date

September 2019

As you will remember, in late November last year we celebrated the achievement of reaching our fundraising target for Phase 1of the Hydrotherapy Pool and set in motion the processes required to start the build.

Our expectation was that building work would commence at the start of the school holiday in July/August 2019 and that it would be well underway by now.

Unfortunately, in the final stages we were made aware of some contractual difficulties and, after taking professional advice, it was agreed that we should suspend the pool build until those difficulties could be ironed out.

This regrettable but necessary decision has clearly had an impact on our immediate plans and re-scheduling will need to be managed to minimise pupil impact.

Clearly, we have a duty to the school, to our pupils, families, our community, and the very many individuals and organisations who have supported our fundraising, to ensure that the build is managed as securely and cost-effectively as possible. This delay will now also require us to assess any cost and/or funding implications before we proceed.

A dedicated Hydro pool committee has been established to manage this process and has been working through the summer.  The committee is made up of senior staff and Governors and will report on progress regularly.

We know this up-date will be disappointing to many people, not least the pupils themselves, but hope you will understand our need to manage such a significant project with appropriate care and responsibility.

Yours sincerely

Christmas 2018 came early for us at Avalon School with the news that we'd  smashed the £1.1m fundraising target for Phase 1 and would see the Hydrotherapy Pool the school and local community need, start to take shape during 2019. So remarkable had been the pupils’ fundraising that news reached Hong Kong, where a charity was so impressed it pledged a large donation. Together with a generous grant from St James’s Place Foundation in Cirencester, this has placed the much-needed pool in sight...

“Thank you so much!” is the message from Avalon’s pupils and teachers, who are grateful for the unstinting support shown by the local community over the past few years. Headteacher Alison Murkin (now retired), said:

“This has been a real labour of love and our pupils have been incredible. They have each used their abilities and ideas to raise money for the pool, and have inspired so many others to help us. I would like to say a huge thank you to them and also to all the local groups and those wider afield, who have contributed to making this pool a reality.''

The Hydrotherapy Pool will be built within the school grounds to the designs below, which reflect the buildings in the area. The design has been carefully planned to provide an excellent facility when built, but also to provide the opportunity for further development in the future. When complete, the designs below provide everything required to meet the needs of pupils and visiting groups:

  • A pool to meet Sport England’s guidance
  • Three changing cubicles and three large showers
  • One accessible bathroom and changing room
  •  A small group changing room

We are continue to fundraise for the interior equipment which will cost around £115,000 and for Phase 2. Any support to help achieve this would be appreciated.

Individuals: Donations will be so gratefully received online via the link to Givey. https://www.givey.com/friendsofavalonpta

We can accept cheques payable to ‘Friends of Avalon PTA’ or cash at school, as well (Avalon School, Brooks Road, Street, Somerset BA16 0PS)

Companies: Perhaps you could set your team a fundraising challenge? Corporate donations will attract tax relief, and we’d be delighted to acknowledge your support somewhere permanent.
