Welcome to the webpage of the Avalon School Governing Body.

We are a small, enthusiastic governing body who along with the school staff, parents and carers are dedicated to providing the best education possible for Avalon pupils.

Our Governing Body currently has 10 members. They come from a variety of backgrounds and have a wide range of skills, knowledge and expertise. Membership is made up of co-opted governors (6); elected parent governor (1); staff elected governor (1); Local Authority governor (1) and the Headteacher. We have two vacancies at present.

In addition we have a clerk, who looks after the administrative side of our work. The clerk is the only paid member of the governing body.

The role of the Governing Body is to:

  • Use our knowledge and experience to provide the Head Teacher and staff with support, advice and information.

  • Challenge the Head Teacher by asking searching questions and looking for evidence of school improvement.

  • Make important decisions on policies and strategies, and stand by our decisions.

The Governing Body is answerable to Ofsted, parents and the wider community. We take part in a range of visits to school, both formally and informally, in order to give a broader context to our discussions and so that we can form productive relationships with pupils, parents and staff. We also act as champions of the school in the local and wider community, promoting its interests and successes.

The Full Governing Body meets on four occasions each school year. We also operate a number of committees, working groups and hold individual responsibilities that, in conjunction with the school staff, looks more closely at important areas of the school’s performance and development. Governors also visit their linked class once a term and attend school events whenever possible.

If you would like to know more about what we do, to comment or to ask a question, then please feel free to approach us or ask via the school to make contact with one of us.

Alternatively, if you would like an opportunity to make a real difference to Avalon pupils and the chance to contribute to the good of the community, leading to real satisfaction and a sense of achievement, then why not consider joining us. Please feel free to contact me, via the school, for an informal chat.
