Students enjoyed an evening of food and dance, with a buffet, ice cream bar, photo booth and disco. Showing their best moves on the dance floor and poses in the photo booth. Students got glittered and sparkled so that they were disco ready before DJ Greg Mason spun his best tunes and kept the dance floor full all night long! A big thank you to Bob Burns (Burns the Bread bakery) for kindly donating a delicious buffet and to Brookside School for donating the use of their fabulous marque - Prom's never had such a glamorous location. The work the students produced was so outstanding staff began commissioning them to produce artwork for them; it soon became clear that they could not keep up with demand. As a result, the school is having prints made in a range of sizes from Limited Edition canvasses to post card size prints, which can be purchased framed or unframed. It is now branching out to produce mugs, cards and soon tote bags, all printed with the art work. | Read more here: http://www.avalonschool.net/news/2018/06/13/talented-avalon-artists-selling-1-000-of-art-work-in-a-week Celebrating Local Businesses http://www.avalonschool.net/news/2018/06/13/celebrating-local-businesses Wed, 13 Jun 2018 10:08:00 +0100 Laura http://www.avalonschool.net/news/2018/06/13/celebrating-local-businesses Avalon School in Street is pleased to announce the launch of its business awards scheme. The ‘Lions of Zululand’ arrived from KwaZulu Natal, South Africa for their 13th annual UK tour in April and will be performing in schools nationally every day until the end of July. We are extremely grateful to ‘Happy Days’ charity and the local ‘Brue Boys’ choir who have kindly provided funding to enable Avalon students to access this unique, musical experience. The day began with Zulu musicians bursting into our school hall wearing traditional Zulu costume and performing an impressive show to our students. Throughout the day, the whole school participated in a carousel of workshops including; singing, dancing, drawing and painting artefacts and exploring the Zulu culture and language. We ended the day inviting parents to join us in the hall for a celebratory performance of the song and dance we had all been learning throughout the day. Avalon staff, students and parents have clearly been moved by this magical experience: ‘A student moved closer to the performers at one point to see better’. ‘A student did a ‘high five’ with one of the performers’. ‘It was inspiring and uplifting’ (student). ‘I enjoyed the dancing and singing. The show was brilliant’! (student). ‘It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen in a school’. ‘I honestly don’t think I’ve seen anything as exciting as the group performance at the end with the parents joining in as well. There was a real sense of unity. I think the pupils will remember it for a long time’. ‘That was so energising and inspirational’. ‘It was great to see the whole school involved’. ‘A student sat at the very front, dancing in her seat, laughing and joining in. Even when the musicians were really loud with the drumming, she was able to calmly put her ear defenders on and stay in her seat’. ‘Students were laughing and smiling, very obviously enjoying all the music and dancing’. ‘The Lions of Zululand did not stop singing from the time they got off the bus until they left. Their enthusiasm in working with our students really shone through and bought out a huge amount of exuberance from Avalon. The best music day experience I have seen during my time working at Avalon’. | Read more here: http://www.avalonschool.net/news/2018/05/14/lions-of-zululand-visit-to-avalon-school
