Avalon's Outreach Programme

The lead Educational Psychologists, Kate Lee and Dawn Starley, sought the views of our partner schools in order to plan and implement a new Outreach Offer. The new Outreach Offer aims to 'build the capacity' of our partner schools to meet the needs of pupils with SEND.

Independent Learning Assistant Courses

2017/18 Independent Learning Assistant Courses

Two ILA courses have run during this academic year.  One was hosted by Elmhurst Junior School and the other by Wookey Primary School.

The Elmhurst group is made up of 8 teaching assistants from 4 schools (primary and secondary).

The Wookey group is made up of 8 teaching assistants from 4 different primary schools.

Also, schools from which an ILA attended the course at Crispin Secondary School during Summer 2017 were offered follow up sessions of ‘peer supervision’.

The Elmhurst group have also begun to attend ‘peer supervision’ sessions, facilitated by the Educational Psychologist.

At the current time of writing, the Wookey group have one more training session to complete.

Evaluation of each session takes place, with the ILA courses as a whole being evaluated over the summer, with an evaluation report completed.

2018/19 Independent Learning Assistant Courses

We are in the process of setting up ILA courses to run during the Autumn 2018 term.  Please contact Helen Crew at Avalon School email: sch.610@educ.somerset.gov.uk or telephone 01458 443081 if you are interested in being a ‘host school’ and/or would be interested in your teaching assistants having a place.  Please note that places are limited.

Parent/Carer Outreach

Does your child have SEN&D?

The Parent/Carer Group is a friendly, small group of parents and carers who meet every month to socialise, relax and unwind, and share experiences of living with a young person who has Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities. The group is supported by Angela Bolton, PFSA.  At the request of those attending, others can be invited to talk about specific issues (e.g. Educational Psychologist, CAMHS,).

We meet at Avalon School on the second Thursday of each month (except during school holidays) from 7.00pm until 8.30pm.

This group is available to both parents/carers of children and young people attending our partner mainstream schools, as well as parents/carers of children and young people attending Avalon School.

Contact Angela for more details, or just turn up.
